BJM & The Veldt to Play 3 Exclusive Shows in New England

For lovers of shoegaze, space and psych rock, this week brings great things for those who happen to be in Boston, Philadelphia and New York City (and have actually got their hands on some hot tickets to what seem to be sold out and near-sold-out shows).

Who’s playing? Two legends come together – each in their own niche sub-genres with a very slight overlap. Headliners The Brian Jonestown Massacre are known far and wide to anybody who hasn’t had their head under a rock in the past few decades. They are joined by The Veldt, also pioneers in shoegaze and alternative soul – an interesting mix but one that works, beautifully uniting influences like Motown, Arthur Lee, Massive Attack and Cocteau Twins.

Brian Jonestown Massacre is touring in support of their new album, Musique de Film Imaginé (music for film imagined), which is a soundtrack that pays homage to the great European film directors of the late 50’s and 60’s, such as François Truffaut & Jean-Luc Godard. It was created for an imaginary French film and released through A Recordings Ltd.

BJM frontman Anton Newcombe explains, “The album that you are about to hear is a soundtrack, my own creation, a tribute to great directors and filmmakers to an era that now seems to be behind us. Leaving the smart person to care to imagine that this art could now be in the shadow of its former glory. “The interesting thing about this project is that the film does not exist either. Even so, I imagined and I realized its soundtrack… Now it’s your turn, you are the listener to imagine the film.”

Their peers in beautiful music-making – The Veldt – join them for three exclusive dates in New England. Pioneers of alternative soul and shoegaze, identical twins Danny and Daniel Chavis formed the band in 1986 in Raleigh, North Carolina,  lifting their band’s name from a Ray Bradbury science fiction story. The band’s original drummer Marvin Levi is still with the band today, as is newcomer bassist Hayato Nakao, originally hailing from Japan and guitarist Frank Olsen – both also played with the Chavis brothers under the name Apollo Heights.

Musically reared in the church and juke-joints of their native southern state, the twins have been performing since they were children, listening to music that included gospel, Motown and Pink Floyd. Their colorful history involves signings to 3 major labels, recordings under producers as notable as Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Ray Shulman (Bjork, The Sugarcubes, The Sundays), and Lincoln Fong (Moose), as well as a name switch to Apollo Heights and back again to The Veldt.

This past month, The Veldt released a smashing new EP this year called The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur. Mike Doherty from The Guardian says, “With Danny’s enveloping hooks, Daniel’s swooning falsetto… the new songs invite paradoxical praise: serenely assaultive, vertiginously soothing”, while Michael A. Gonzales from Soulhead writes, “No matter how futuristic space-age cyberpunk the music became, Daniel’s vocals was the gravity that kept us from floating away completely”.

Named for an E.E. Cummings poem, this EPis now available via Bandcamp (CD, digital) and Leonard Skully Records (vinyl).

Catch The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Veldt at one of these dates:

May 6 – Philadelphia – Union Transfer
May 7 – Boston – Paradise Rock Club
May 9 – New York City – Webster Hall

“For all the things that were concealed behind the iron curtain, one very cool sonic phenomenon has emerged – now called Sounds of Sputnik, the world is a slightly better place thanks to their musings. Very pleased to be involved in this project” – Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre)

Russia’s Sounds of Sputnik is releasing their single Light Scheme (Fran Ashcroft Remix)’ from their debut LP ‘New Born’ feat. Ummagma, which also gets a re-release in early May through hallmark U.S. shoegaze label Moon Sounds Records. UK producer Fran Ashcroft, widely known for his work in the psych rock scene, has also worked with Damon Albarn (Blur) and Lords of Acid. The single comes with a smashing new video, produced and directed by Latvia/UK experimental filmmaker Dariy Karyakin and featuring actors Nadine Andreeva and Egon Skakun.

Dariy Karyakin has previously produced for David Lynch pet fave Nocturne Blue, has been praised by 6-time Emmy Winner Dutch Rall, and recently joined former Underworld consultant Yannick Joubert as part of the international Krinum Art and Design team. He is devoted to making music videos and short films, for which he has earned various awards and honours.

The ‘New Born’ LP presents a palette of ethereal guitar, powerful drums, lush bass, and clever guitars, topped off with gossamer female vocals. Sounds of Sputnik paired up with Canadian-Ukrainian dreampop duo Ummagma to co-write, produce, and record this album. Ummagma’s Shauna McLarnon and Alexx Kretov also both contribute stunning vocals.

Rooted in a shared love of melodic dream pop, post-rock and shoegaze, both Sounds of Sputnik and Ummagma bring their own influences from Lush, Curve, Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, together with Hammock, Jesus & Mary Chain and The Twilight Sad to create briliant “dream noise”.

The ‘New Born’ LP also features contributions by several legendary guests: drummer Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver/ Brian Jonestown Massacre) on ‘Overdrive’, and remixes by Malcolm Holmes (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), psych rock producer Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid), Russian producers Morozov and Oleg Mezherovsky, and Brazil’s Mind Movies. British producer Marc Joy (Lights That Change, Primal Scream, Oasis, Bernard Butler, Mike Peters, Golden Fable) provided mastering support.
“Working on the SOS remix was a real pleasure, and very straightforward – I just did what the song asked me to, no fixes or additions; everything was there, and in truth was already captured very well. I kind of ran with that and just changed the focus a little,” explains Fran Ashcroft. “When something comes along like this, that’s so well put together, the challenge is not to mess up what’s already right, and keep the integrity of the song intact”
“The lyrics are about the crappy situation we’ve gotten ourselves into as a society – and for us as individuals too, and a hopeful way out of this,” explains Shauna McLarnon of Ummagma. “This song could have remained a YouTube instrumental non-sensation forever if it weren’t for the addition of lyrics and vocals, but I did have in mind that optimism of years past when we really believed we were moving forward. We were clearly on the same wavelength,” says Roman Kalitkin of Sounds of Sputnik.
About Sounds of Sputnik:
Sounds of Sputnik is headed by Roman Kalitkin, whose signature sound mixes post-rock, shoegaze and dream pop with a slight kickback to noise pop. Ask For Joy Announces ‘Cherry Popsicle’ single from ‘New Private Window’ LP

FOR FANS OF: Chapterhouse, Catherine Wheel, Jesus & Mary Chain, Cheatahs, Title Fight, Presents For Sally

Euphoric (Not on LP)
To-night (Not on LP)
Summercrush (Not on LP)

“Just the right dose of reverberation for a track that seems perfectly hybrid between indie pop and shoegaze” – The Record Stache

“A windswept sonic island within a sea of reverberating melodic joy. A merry dance through golden peaks & troughs, stuffed full of shimmering layered reverb drenched guitars!” – Primal Music Blog

“Gives rise to a sweet euphoria. This single shows Ask For Joy to be a clever, calculated ambassador of gaze” – The Sound of Confusion

“Rossetto has established himself as a prolific songwriter and recording artist” – Drowned in Sound

“Fullbodied reverb over popperfect drum machines and gorgeous harmonies… daydream induced escapism” When The Sun Hits

“Dream pop of the highest category… Ask for Joy shows that the dream world is eternal” – The Blog That Celebrates Itself

Ask For Joy presents the new single “Cherry Popsicle” from the 7-track LP ‘New Private Window’. A mainstay on the U.S. shoegaze scene, this is Ask For Joy’s 9th release, featuring walls of shimmering reverb-drenched guitars, endearing vocals and expansive harmonic melodies.
Founded in 2005, Ask For Joy is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Aaron Rossetto. Based in Austin, Texas, artists like himself and Ringo Deathstarr are putting this city on the shoegaze map.

Combining the fuzzy warm shoegaze of Slowdive with the raw sonic power of bands like Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine, Ask For Joy manages to create a divine cacophony of what can literally be called beautiful noise. This new album shines a light into a slightly darker corners of the mind through the themes it explores.

“It’s fair to say that the material on New Private Window tends to the seedier side: the lighter and darker sides of substance abuse; a couple’s murder-suicide; sexually suggestive expressions of love and desire. These are the types of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that one might want to keep hidden from friends or loved ones, tucked safely deep within the darkest reaches of the individual,” explains Aaron Rossetto.

“New Private Window explores these stories often kept secret. The title refers to the option in modern Web browsers that starts an untracked session, leaving no search or site traces behind for others to discover. Building up layers of guitar tracks, synthesizers, and thick choir-like background vocals gives the songs on the EP a sense of impenetrability and shelter from prying eyes (or ears) – in much the same way as, say, opening a private browser window would do.”

Inspired by the Phil Spector “wall of sound” style production fuzzy, pitch-bent, all-enveloping guitar-driven sound, as seen in Jesus and Mary Chain recordings, and equally by the poppy, harmony-laced sensibilities of the Beach Boys, this music fuses the rawness of the DIY esthetic with atmospheric waves of sound. The output is a lush textured and dreamy style of pop music.

‘New Private Window’ was released on Rossetto’s own Infinitely Recursive Records imprint. Several tracks from this album are also being offered as a free download via the artist’s Bandcamp at

Leave The Light On
6 May 2016
Ireland’s Kolumbus Releases ‘Leave The Light On’ After Reaching Google Play No. 1 at Christmas

Website (includes free download)
Video for ‘Goodbye’
‘Leave The Light On’ & The City Dublin interview

“A sound that’s simultaneously stirring and soothing. The whole thing maintains a mellow mood as it paces placidly towards a pleasant but powerful climactic chorus before fading out faintly”Pure M Magazine

“Fantastic show. Great songs. Great voice. Highly endearing and remarkable spirited performer with Class A songmanship and wise lyrics”The Record Stache

“‘Leave the Light On’ – the latest single by Wicklow-based singer songwriter Kolumbus – succeeds where many songs about heartbreak fail. From the opening guitar riff and gentle weaving lyrics the listener is pulled into the song”The City Dublin

“A remarkable single… This melody is so emotional that it caresses the soul upon first listen. This is a single that helps connect with the deepest memories of our mind. Excellent work”Zone Nights

Irish singer-songwriter Kolumbus is gearing up to release Leave The Light On’, the first single from his debut EP ‘Give Them Life’. Kolumbus is a musical project representing the solo journey of Irish songwriter Mark ‘Cappy’ Caplice,

This song tells the story of a heart clinging to a fading promise – a promise that a love would never die. “People can make a promise and completely mean it, but keeping it isn’t always in their power,” explains Kolumbus. Sometimes things change and promises go by the wayside, even though you may not want them to.”

Earlier, Kolumbus’ Christmas single ‘You Know It’s Christmas’ hit the No.1 spot on the Google Play Music Charts and Top 20 on iTunes, ahead of heavy hitters Adele and Justin Bieber, with all proceeds goint to Inner City Helping Homeless and Baltinglass Lions Christmas appeal. That song also features the West Wicklow Voices and Chorus Kids Choir.

Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, at a young age Mark Caplice moved to Wicklow, where he still resides. His performance name Kolumbus derives from the fact that he has always had a passion for travel and exploration, even from a young age. The 26-year-old believes life is too short to dwell, so his philosophy is to do.
Kolumbus was also influenced by artists such as Ben Howard, Elbow and Fleetwood Mac. His output exhibits clever craftsmanship both lyrically and melodically, blending several different styles to create his own unique brand of energetic captivating music.
Of course it helps that this track was produced by Gavin Glass, the music director for John Carney’s new film “Sing Street”, and engineered by Scott Halliday, previously a guitar tech with Prince and James Vincent Mcmorrow. Several other notable musicians make contributions here: drummer Graham Hopkins, who plays with Irish folk legend Glen Hansard, and organist Conor O’Reilly, who has recorded with U2 and has had his music performed in Carnagie Hall.
2016 is proving to be a very busy year for Kolumbus, having already toured through Germany and Austria, traveling over 4000km on 2 planes, 17 trains and 1 bicycle. This year, Ireland, England, Germany and the U.S.A are all set to figure on his tour schedule.

Coverage highlights include being featured on Ireland’s TV3, Irish TV – Sky channel 191,, Classic Hits 4FM, KCLR, Dublin City FM and East Coast FM. Mark also featured on The Late Late Show as part of Gavin Glass’s band and a March episode of TheCityDublin’s Music From The Alley.

“Part of the motivation behind my music and travel is the fact.that I have lost a number of people close to me,” explains Mark Caplice. “Many people, both friends and family, have passed away in the last few years and this just reminds me how short life really is… so If you want to do something, you should do it. That is the inspiration behind the forthcoming EP title “Give Them Life” and you’ll see that the cover image represents this really well.”
Kolumbus currently has several tracks on his website for free download. “At this point, I just want to get my music out there as much as possible. Ideas are thought’s with potential. I have hundreds of songs. Now it’s time to Give Them Life”.

Canada’s Meter Bridge Announce ‘Filter/ Kite’ EP, Present New Video

“Nods in the direction of early kraut electronica experimentations in the style of Kraftwerk, Alphaville, Falco and even early-phase Berlin… They have created a distinctive sonic identity for themselves, forged of minimalistic groove-infused alternative dance melodies”Louder Than War

“Like a synth pop oddity that’s been dug up from a 1984 time capsule, its minimal sci-fi synths are redolent of the likes of early Human League or Kraftwerk. While each bar is riven with Jill Beaulieu’s vocals that are part exotic Grace Jones part clipped Debbie Harry attitude”God is in the TV Zine

“Evocative of Man Machine period Kraftwerk, had the German four-piece chosen to invent glitchcore on their way to perfecting technopop” – The Record Stache

“Melodic synth swells, infectious percussion & that immense duel vocal attack…a band on the cusp of greatness. Perfection personified” – Primal Music Blog

Refreshing addition to today’s synthpop scene, bringing in post-punk and new wave influences in ways unlike others” – Stereo Embers Magazine

“Electropop brilliance. Lucid combination of groove and offset melody… the spirit of Kraftwerk” – Jammerzine

On the trail of their recent single ‘It Was Nothing’, Canadian synthwave duo Meter Bridge have announced they will be releasing their latest EP ‘Filter / Kite’ through WEATNU Records. It includes three tracks – ‘Filter’, ‘Kite’ and a Mind Veneration Remix by Mark LaFountain. The two original tracks from this new EP feature catchy and crystal clear production with particular attention to the vocals. LaFountain’s output is a wicked club mix with a heavy groove, while the original version of ‘Kite’ features modular synthesis over a minor chord progression, unique quarter time percussion and staccato rhythm.

Hailing from Nelson, British Columbia, Richard Kleef and Jill Beaulieu have been playing together since 2011, creating a distinctive and unmistakable sonic identity as Meter Bridge, forged of minimalistic groove-infused alternative dance melodies that are seemingly retro and futuristic at the same time.

According to The Record Stache, which ranked their Slow Motion LP as the 8th best synthpop album of 2015, their music is “evocative of Man Machine period Kraftwerk, had the German four piece chosen to invent glitchcore on their way to perfecting technopop”.

“Our song ‘Filter’ is a song about persecution and about the complicated process of resistance and assimilation followed by reclamation of spirit and culture,” explains Jill Beaulieu. “For the video, film-maker Bryan Webb took our concept of invasion, assimilation and rescue, making it modern and mysterious. It was filmed in studio, as well on location, in several different nearby forests.”

“We are very pleased to be involved with Mark Lafountain. He was one of our earliest supporters and we value his work immensely. He added new life into this song, transforming it into something even better than the original,” says Jill Beaulieu.
Mark LaFountain has been creating and recording electronic music under the alias Mind Veneration since the late 1980’s. Mark’s new wave flavored remix of ‘Kite’ was inspired by some of his favorites, including ambient house pioneers The Orb.
“The synth bands of the early 80’s were amazing to me. Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, Men Without Hats, Soft Cell, Naked Eyes… I couldn’t get enough of that synthetic sound,” explains Mark LaFountain. “I eventually stumbled upon the Meter Bridge track ‘Kite’ and I felt as though I were hearing a hidden gem from the likes of The Human League, which I’d never heard before. I played the track relentlessly!”

Meter Bridge is offering this new EP as a free download via Bandcamp, similar to their previous single ‘It Was Nothing’ featuring remix by Rodney Cromwell). Meter Bridge will be playing the Electro London Festival on September 10, 2016 with Wolfgang Flür (ex-Kraftwerk), Shiny Darkness and others.

France’s Helix Pulsar Announce Debut Album and Tease First Single ‘Rapture’

FOR FANS OF: The Danse Society, Clan of Xymox (Xymox), De/vision, Camoflage, Sisters of Mercy
LEAD TRACKS: Rapture, Death and Beauty, Towards the Stars, Come, Cuts Bare Mix

Photos by Elektrographie

“Rapture’ is truly all that – get ready to be enraptured if you are a fan of late 80s goth sounds a la Clan of Xymox or Sisters of Mercy, with a tad bigger dose of electronica than the latter group, thrown in for good measure”The Record Stache

“A quasi-industrial yet fully electronic mix of pop and punch, Helix achieve a powerful anthem for the underground pounding with beats and surging with harmony”Jammerzine

France’s electro rock synthpop outfit Helix Pulsar has announced they will soon release their debut LP ‘Beyond the Wall’, a 12-track debut EP that was produced by Britain’s Creative Music Studios, which is based in Brentwood. ‘Rapture’ is the lead single from this album.

Most often likened to The Danse Society and Clan of Xymox, they count Depeche Mode, The Cure, Archive, Mesh, IAMX and Muse among their key influences. They also seem to draw inspiration from such themes as sexuality and the addictiveness therein.
“This song is about how it feels to surrender to the burning desire of one’s lover… a perfect blend of sensuality and wild instincts as well,” says Estelle Flaujat.
In early 2014, Olivier Rennesson (formerly of Shiny Darkness) joined forces with Estelle Flaujat, who had, until then been involved in gospel and jazz. They united over a shared love of synthpop and electropop and founded Helix Pulsar. Both educated in classical music (piano for Olivier, piano / violin for Estelle), they compose their music as absolute electro synthphonies – note by note, pulse by pulse.
After relocating from Nantes to Lille (northern France), they chose to add a rock dimension to their synth pop vibes and welcomed guitarist Steve Boudoux, and their sound came to adopt the sense of pulsating electro rock waves, with contrasting yet engaging rhythms and distinctive harmonies.
“We’ve been crafting this album over these past 2 years composing with our busy private lives. This album is grounded in our personal history, helping us to expel our inner wounds from the past but also celebrating our love and life together,” explains Olivier Rennesson.

‘Beyond The Wall’ will be released on May 6. A video for ‘Rapture’ and a further single is expected.
